ST NICOLAS, NEWBURY

HOME GROUP QUESTIONS

WEEK BEGINNING 15 APRIL 2007

ACTS 1:1-11 - MISSION IMPOSSIBLE?

1. This week we begin a new series on the Acts of the Apostles. To start with, what do we know about its likely author? Have a look at Colossians 4:14, 2 Timothy 4:11 and Philemon 1:24. What do we learn?

2. Read Luke 1:1-4. What was the main purpose behind Luke's decision to write his account of what Jesus did and said? What steps has he taken to ensure that what he sets out is reliable?

3. Now read Acts 1:1-11. What does Luke tell us about what happened between the resurrection of Jesus and his ascension?

4. If Luke's Gospel is about 'what Jesus began to do and to teach' (Acts 1:1) what does that imply about what the Acts of the Apostles is going to be about? How does this tie in to the way we summarise what St Nicolas is all about?

5. Most religions regard their founders as having completed their work during their lifetime on earth. In what way is Christianity different?

6. How would you answer someone who suggested that Jesus made some pretty poor choices when it came to recruiting his disciples? Why do you think he did it then? And why does does he do it now?!

7. If you could have the power to do anything you wanted, what would you choose to do?

8. In verse 8, Jesus promises his disciples, 'You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you...' What exactly is this power for? Talk about how your answers to this question compare with your answers to question 7.

9. The disciples back then had to wait for the Day of Pentecost before they received what Jesus promised. In what ways might it be rather different for us? What steps can we take to become more full of the Spirit's power?

10. The main focus of the church's Prayer Day on Thursday this week is on Parents and Family Life. Home Groups are invited to join in whenever they meet. See http://www.st-nicolas-newbury.org/prayer-day.htm for details.
